Shout out to the WBB Seniors

I want to give a shout out to our three seniors on the Loyola University Maryland Women's Basketball team.

Katie Sheahin, Alyssa Sutherland and Candice Walker.

It seems like only yesterday that you arrived on campus.  I wanted to thank you for your hard work and dedication to the women's basketball program and your work to help make Loyola a better place.

Loyola WBB Host 800 Elementary School Students

The Loyola Women's Basketball team will be playing an early game tomorrow.  The 11 AM start is a different for a midweek game.  But there is a good reason for that - Field Trip Day.

Over 800 students from local elementary schools will get a tour, get a nutrition lecture and meet a representative from the admission office.

The students submitted essays and the winners of the essay contest get to sit courtside at the game.

It will be a fun day for the team and the elementary students.  If you can talk a long lunch and attend the game!

Update - UGH - snow causes delay. only around 150 kids can make it now... :-(

The Youthful Joy of the Super Bowl

In 1972, the Washington Redskins advanced to the Super Bowl.  I was five almost six years-old.  I remember the excitement around town and the joy that filled the house as the big day approached.  The Redskins luckily would advance to several more Super Bowls and even though I have been in Baltimore since 1983, I still bleed burgundy and gold.  My eldest son was about the same age the first time the Ravens made the Super Bowl and he was hooked.  My younger son, was not yet alive the last time the Baltimore Ravens made it to the Big Game.  My daughters are both stoked that the team has made it to NOLA.

Tonight, we had six 12 year-olds in the basement watching the game and I think that they are all hooked on the Ravens.

What was the memory that hooked you on your favorite team?  Let me know...

Six year-old Soccer

Watching six year olds playing soccer for the first time brings back so many memories. Seeing Pele play in the 70s with Santos at the old Memorial Stadium. Being awestruck when 55,000 fans crammed RFK stadium to watch an NASL game. Soccer is a game played by children. Children who end up never playing once they get older. Children whose parents maybe never played.

The future of soccer in America? Is it three on three with six year olds scoring goals and worring more about the post game snack than the score? Is it with the MLS? Whose games are sometimes less interesting than the six year olds. How can such a simple game still be so foreign? Will we ever become the superpower of the pitch?

I have to go get ready to coach the gray team, we play light blue and I need to scout them.

Getting ready for lacrosse?

Hard to believe it, lacrosse season is almost here.  The Loyola Men's Lacrosse team has been working hard, conditioning, practicing, lifting, you name it, they are focused on getting ready for the new season.

The team was honored with an invitation to play the US Men's National team in Florida in January.  This early scrimmage will be played at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex.  If you have never been you should try to get there, it is a great place to spend a day.

The team has a great schedule including a rematch with the Maryland Terps.  This game is at Loyola and tickets are selling fast!

It might be cold outside but soon the lacrosse fields of Baltimore will be swarming with players looking to make their mark on the fastest game on two feet.

Which game are you most looking forward to seeing the Hounds play this year?
